In the nightstand by her bed an unopened envelope
Lays tearstained and yellowed, filled with faded hope
It’s the last letter he ever wrote her, first one she never read
One her heart couldn’t handle, no matter what it said
They were young and so in love, once upon another time
The promises were broken one cold winter night
Next summer she up and left him, though he begged her not to go
So he sent her sweet love letter, for ten long years he wrote

The unopened letter might have made her life better
We all live with the choices we make
When the dream gets shattered, what was wrong don’t seem to matter
Sometimes pride gets in the way, And I’m sorry can be so hard to say

On that last letter they delivered, she cried a final tear
For the two words she had waited, desperately to hear
They were written there on a single page but how was she to know
They came too late to mend a heart broke so long ago

The unopened letter might have made her life better
We all live with the choices we make
When a dream gets shattered, what was wrong don’t seem to matter
Sometimes pride gets in the way, And I forgive you, is oh so hard to say

In the nightstand by her bed an unopened envelope
Lays tearstained and yellowed, filled with faded hope
